Frank Hammel known as a gunman arrives on the stage in Medicine Bow shortly after The Virginian arrives in town. When the people of Medicine Bow learn of Hammel's arrival, many of the residents with skeletons in their closets believe he is after them. Having saved The Virginian's life ten years earlier, The Virginian visits Hammel at the hotel. Hammel tells The Virginian that he is waiting for the 2:30 pm stage but the Virginian believes he is after someone. One by one Hammel indicates he is not after various citizens of Medicine Bow. Visits to the general store and saloon has various residents scared and results in Hammel winging a man in the arm with a shot. With the sheriff out of town on business, The Virginian makes repeated visits to the local Judge looking for a way to restrain Hammel until the stage leaves but he fails. The Virginian returns the body of one of Asa Keogh's sons to him after The Virginain shot and killed him during an attempted theft of his horse. After the burial the crippled Asa suffers a heart attack. Asa is dying and asks The Virginian to see if his daughter who was stolen by Indians when she was ten will return home. He had found her eight years after her capture but she decided to stay with the Shoshone at that time. Asa wants to give her his farm as his only other child is an outlaw. The daughter, Sarah, agrees to return with her son as her Shoshone husband is dead. Sarah's other brother Dobie upon hearing that Dick was killed comes to avenge his brother's death. Complicating the situation for The Virginian a couple of men in town want the property due to silver ore on it. Asa has died splitting the property between Sarah and The Virginian. Randy heads to Montana to pick up a mare for a future horse ranch he and a friend Georgie Sam Smith who is there hope to start. His friend convinces Randy to stay over to meet a girl Dulcie Colby that Georgie has been trying to meet. Randy goes to the Colby ranch to see her and check out their horses but finds himself working on the horse ranch after he meets Dulcie. Dulcie's brother Ben tells Randy to drive the lunch wagon with Dulcie. Randy tries to give the job to Georgie but Ben and Dulcie are adamant that Randy drive it. Favor learns that a lack of cattle cars may force him to take a loss on his herd adding to the problems on the drive. When old Josh wrestles a steer to win a bet, Favor takes his frustrations out on Josh by firing him. Favor regrets his outburst but Josh's pride prevents him from letting Favor make it up to him. A letter from an old friend has Josh thinking he has inherited half of a ranch but he soon learns the friend has dementia and there is no ranch. Because he can't cypher he loses a chance at a job and is turned down for another drive as well. Favor sends Rowdy to the next town to check on the missing rail cars. They find out a flash flood took out a bridge so there will be no rail cars. Instead of taking $5 per head, Favor decides to drive the herd to the next town for a better price. As the drive leaves town, Josh confronts Favor but his ailing body causes him to pass out. Josh finally realizes his pride may have to bend a bit to allow friends to help him as Favor wants him ... Rowdy decides to check out the town by window shopping. The Marshal's luscious young wife desperately seeking any way to escape him, steals Rowdy's empty wallet but returns it to him. Rowdy is a perfect foil, as she meets him at the blacksmith shop telling him she is in trouble and needs $50 to leave.
